Korea~ Thursday, July 7, 2011 @ 8:55 PM
My colleagues actually came to send me off and picked me up from my home at 5 am! Air asia, not good for long haul flights, but we got a rather empty plane, so we were just moving around. My two new friends I met on the plane, really nice people~ the lady is an Australian, the guy is a Korean studying in New Zealand. After whole day of travelling, finally at Incheon. Next time must fly direct. -_- Look at their airport! So clean and sleek! My good friend throughout my trip. AREX line, the airport express. The train looks so sterile I think doctors can perform operations there. There's a severe lack of lifts and escalators in the train stations, like the Japanese train stations (you guys remember!?), so we were running about transferring to different lines and running around. But we still missed the last train!! Anyway we took a taxi, and phew the driver could spoke really really fluent Japanese (I thought he must be Japanese), and he got us to our guesthouse. We were so happy to see our room, even though it was really small. The owners' super cute daughter! They have a son too, and the first time we met him was when he was pooing! Hahaha it was so smelly too!! Breakfast was free, and the guesthouse was really such a lovely place. So quaint and cosy! At Gyeongbokgung Palace. Swarming with tourists, but otherwise an ok place to go. They had a pretty cool "retro street" too. The lovely streets of Anguk. If only I had time I could spend half a day here just walking about. Cheese rice cake! It tasted a little bit like fa-gao, a little more chewy, with cheese. At Hyehwa, lots of young and pretty people about. The things are pretty too! Myeong Dong. There were so many Japanese around. Going to Jeju! Lunch at Gimpo International Airport~ All this for 15000 won, which is about $17? Meals are really quite cheap in Korea, and there's no tax too! Reaching Jeju~ Our hotel! The hotel staff were really really helpful and friendly, though they couldn't really speak English, or Japanese, or Mandarin. Abalones are cheap in Jeju, but good, and comes in bite size too! Jeju milk! Cheonjiyeon (I think) falls. More like a pool. Not really impressive, but I guess it's ok. ![]() Throughout our 4 day stay we were at Seogwipo City, which in my opinion, much better than Jeju City. There're lots of lovely people who'd help us with directions even though they couldn't speak a word of English. Submarine!! What a costly but cool experience!! (40,000 won, abt $40 plus) Seafood pot for only 30,000 won. Chock full of seafood for 2. CUTEST JEJU ISLANDER. Jeongbang Falls, definitely more impressive than Cheonjiyeon. The Haenyo, so happy to see them! They're women divers who'd dive without oxygen tanks into the scary sea (waves are really quite strong in Jeju, nothing like Sentosa). I broke my fortune teller's rule of not eating beef many times in Korea. Seongsan Ilchubong. Super strong winds but really nice view. Horaa~ SUPER GIGANTIC TONKATSU. For only 8000 won. So many chrysanthemums around! This school teacher was really funny! He heard that we're from Singapore so he grabbed his students and demonstrated how the torture tools were used to us! Hahaha! Who is this lady? My friend asked directions from her in her souvenir shop (we didn't buy anything) and she offered to send us back to the city (about 1 hour away)! She's calling her son in this photo because we asked how he looked like and she just did a video call with him! How cool! Her son is currently studying in a university in Seoul to guess what, become a farmer! Anyway if you're curious, we spoke mostly in an odd mix of Japanese and English. She offered to let us volunteer at her farm when the harvesting season comes (in winter), and said she'll provide lodging and meals. My friend and I are seriously considering it! She owns a really HUGE farm. As if that wasn't enough, she offered to cook us dinner! That's her 2 year old daughter. So so so naughty, but so so so cute. Dinner she whipped up within 30 minutes and a daughter that wouldn't stop pestering her. It was so nice, everything natural. Day 3 in Jeju, breakfast at Paris Baguette, a rather famous bakery chain. Seogwipo Market, dizzyingly large range of seafood. Teddy Bear Museum We took the bus to Jeju city, and were rather disappointed that there was nothing much to do. One REALLY NEEDS A CAR to travel around Jeju. The bus system just isn't extensive enough. Ohhhhh super good bowl of rice cake and soup. Ahhhh of all the meals this was the one I liked the most. Perfect weather to eat it too, I was telling my friend it felt like we were in Korean drama. She said I was spouting rubbish. Back to Seoul. With growling stomachs we hit for Gwangjang market straightaway. All this for 5000 won, which I ate with my friend. Hrm. The japchae was really good though. All the stores sold roughly the same stuff, but the lady in front got all the customers. I will never eat one of these. Never. Dongdaemun. So confusing. Ehwa was much better. A little like Bugis street I suppose, with 10 times the temptation. YAY BBQ!!! The beef ribs was ahhhh so good. I drank almost half a bottle of soju cos my friend wouldn't drink a drop of it. I got a little tipsy. My friend said I snored really loudly that night. I must have, I slept extremely well. Dunkin' donuts for breakfast at Myeong Dong again. My friend and I went separate ways so for a few hours I was alone in Seoul. Spent my last 100,000 won on stuff like gingseng, souvenirs and some facial products. Didn't buy any clothes though, in fact, I didn't even buy that many things on this trip. Walking along cheonggyecheon. A relief from the very hot sun (it was about 30+ degrees in Seoul. Anyway we met this Korean friend who's my friend's friend and we went for dinner. He's a pretty cool guy, 28 and still in army, and he's totally not enjoying it. He even sent us to the airport. I shall end with this miserable-looking pack of rice. Hope to see you again, Korea! |
