One month Wednesday, August 19, 2009 @ 7:47 PM
Last Wednesday saw the first month I start work at NBSS. Everyday's a challenge and like what I've previously said, learning new things everyday. I've started with marking of papers, and tomorrow will be the first time I'll be giving remedial. I'm pretty sick of doing relief because it's really more like baby sitting and practically every relief class I come out with either A: A terrible headache B: Increased blood pressure C: An interesting story to tell my colleagues or D: All of the above. Two days ago I was so mad at a sec 1 class because of some big internal conflict in class which involved throwing of scissors and a boy crying. I seriously wanted to send half the class down for detention. The upper secondary students are not as hyperactive but some of the "ah bengs" and "ah lians" make me think twice when I confront them. But I still have to put on a brave front and ask them to keep their phones (which comprises 99.9% of the time when I have to talk to them) or it'll become mine, and they usually listen (to my relief). Half of the lower sec students call me ah lian teacher now. I asked them why and they say its because of the way I walk and talk. So everytime they greet me they'll be like "HI AH LIAN TEACHER!!" So it's not all about screaming my head off all the times la. I remember on the day of my induction there the head of PE told us that teaching brought the best and the worst out of him. I couldn't agree more. Anyway last Sunday was my school's art carnival. Just thought I'll drop by and see how the art students are doing. Talking about ceramics the kids were bugging me to buy their ceramics (not pictured here) and (being ever the obliging AED) I spent a bomb on the booths. This one done by a sec 5 student. I wanted to talk to her but she was offering face painting to kids. My colleague Aishah (in blue), who's another AED teaching English. Yiwen I tell you she's Sufyan's older sister! The one in green is the younger sister. I remember I was involved in a conversation with these boys explaining that pigs aren't dirty animals (They didn't seemed too convinced by me though). The girls who bugged me to buy their ceramics at their booth. $50 gone (but actually more than half of it was a spa voucher of some sort). My old primary school! Good thing I didn't get to wear the ugly round collar uniforms before I left. Natashah at work. (See I make an effort to remember their names) I liked these cats. If they were on sale I'd seriously consider buying them. I want to get my pay soon! |
